Our Top 5 Beauty Products of “It’s Called Summer, Sweaty”

Our Top 5 Beauty Products of “It’s Called Summer, Sweaty”

Let’s face it, Summer 2020 has been weirder than the one time I sang Meredith Brooke’s “Bitch” in front of my mom and got a hard “that’s never going to happen again” talking to.

We’re stuck indoors. We’re stuck outside. Regardless of where we’re stuck, we just feel stuck. Despite all of the things we’re socially limited from doing, we’re still all experiencing the same summer problem of accommodating our skincare routines to the unforgiving heat, leaving us to figure it out just in time for another seasonal change – Fall.

Instead of having to learn from your own mistakes, you can learn from mine as I give you my perfect, lightweight product recommendations that will help your skin breathe in that hot, hot heat, babes.

Ode to Self – Wave, 2oz – $29

I am landlocked and while I’m not a huge fan of the ocean because I find sharks, killer whales, and sea urchins to be much more threatening than they are in reality, I am a huge fan of Ode to Self’s Wave Soothing and Refining Toning Essence. First off, we love a twofer. Second off, we love a twofer even more in the summer because it’s hot, humid, and you realize that you can take off your clothes, but gotta keep your skin on.

Wave Toning Essence is interesting on many levels. Its consistency is a milky, silky-gel like texture (wow, trademarking that rn), and is, as one might say, “hearty”. Toners ultimately help rid the skin of extra grime and muck left behind from cleansing, but this can be used as an essence as well, its nutrient-packed formula justifies it. Vitamins A, C, calcium, potassium, flavonoids, and antioxidants help to calm, nourish, and protect the skin from environmental stressors and keep skin glowing and bouncy, all in one deep-cleansing swipe.

Bonus, it’s alcohol-free, small batch made, and the definition of affordable luxury.

The Gist: Deeply cleansing and rich in skin-loving vitamins, Wave is the perfect summer toner to protect against all of the pollution that seems to be so much more plentiful on a 100 degree + day.

Rael Snowball Open

Rael Snowball Deep Hydration, Pack of 5 – $24

We’re sweating out here, but somehow my combination skin still lacks moisture in all the right places. End of the day face masks often help me alleviate this concern, but sometimes, it simply ain’t enough. This is the part where Rael’s Moisture Melt Snowballs with Hyaluronic Acid Concentrate enters stage left. This is likely one of the most creative beauty products out there right now. It’s astronaut food for your face.

Packed into each package is a tiny, freeze-dried Hyaluronic Acid concentrate. While I’m no stranger to over-committing myself to arduous DIY projects, Rael hit the nail on the head for the perfect amount of customization. Place into the palm of your hand and mix with your favorite serum and you’ve created the perfect intensely nourishing and hydrating skincare product out there. Bonus, it’s wade with Rael’s H3O Hyaluronic Acid Complex that provides even more hydration than our traditional BFF Hyaluronic Acid.

The Gist: Great for those awkward summer dry moments and those even more awkward “I should have reapplied more sunscreen” moments, Rael’s Moisture Melt Snowballs provide deep and lasting hydration at times with a serum is simply not enough. Not to mention, choose your own adventure with a serum of your choice! Fun!

NOTO Botanics Resurface Scrub – 2 OZ, $32

Listen, I’ll be the first to admit, I am a lazy face washer. I spend 10 seconds lathering in a cleanser, wash it off, and only if I have the whim of wanting to do a repeat, I’ll double cleanse. However, I do love exfoliating in the microdermabrasion form, so I keep it my NOTO’s Resurface Scrub in the shower, ready to polish my face and other dry spots on a whim.

Resurface Scrub is formulated with Lauryl Glucoside, which is a sciency word for a natural ingredient that cleanses while you slough away dead skin cells and make space for new ones. Other superstars such as Lavender Flower Water and Blood Orange act as anti-bacterial agents to gently ward off acne-causing bacteria. Glycerin locks in moisture, and Jojoba Seed Oil provides moisture and a nourishing glow. This is not your traditional scrub, y’all!

In the spirit of summer, I love this product for the days I’ve kicked too much dirt up on a hiking trail. I lied. I hike like three times a year, so more so it helps me on those days that I simply couldn’t keep my hands on my face and need something to give me the mental peace of mind to make up for it.

The Gist: The perfect polish and cleanse moment that you know you should be doing a few times a week habit that you’ve been meaning to pick back up since forever (me – oops). Also packed with AHA’s, so you better be hitting that sunscreen too!

Kinfield Sunday Spray, 3oz – $22

Let me paint a picture of my interpretation of a Sunday – deep remorse of all the things I said I would, but didn’t accomplish for “free time” projects, Netflix, and usually something deep-fried. Oddly, I still enjoy it. Sunday’s are the days we set up the rest of the week, and tie up what we want to leave in the one that’s just past.

Kinfield’s Sunday Spray is exactly what we mean by setting ourselves up for a better future. This moisturizing cooling spray helps to give us a moment away from those times are sunscreen failed us (what I’m actually trying to say is, when you failed your sunscreen, folks). Formulated with aloe, cucumber, and natural spearmint, this product instantly soothes and cools light sunburns. A pretty, natural fragrance Eucalyptus gives us a moment of reprieve through scent and physical sensation with the slightest, hard to explain numbing effect.

The Gist: Sunday Spray is here to help us find relief when we forgot to take the time to prioritize sunscreen. With a light cooling sensation, it can be applied all over your body and super easy to throw into a bag to take on your next field day with you.

Rael’s Good Chemistry, 1.69 OZ – $38

Moisturizer during the summer usually comes in one form – sweat. The irony is, saltwater depleting the skin of natural oils and wreaking havoc on pores and acne breakouts. Despite the sweat, I try to remain consistent with my moisturizer. I have sensitive, combination skin that if gone too long unmoisturized, will show visible flaking under my make up.

My summer dilemma though: that sheet of heavy moisturizer that never seems to settle into the skin and creates a suffocating barrier between sweat and what was supposed to be a good thing (insert joke about a previous relationship here).

Rael’s Good Chemistry Serum isn’t a traditional moisturizer, it’s a serum that’s packed with Rael’s proprietary H3O complex that packs in moisture, Fullerene to protect from antioxidants, and Green Tea Leaf Extract to heals against all the things we know and don’t know are happening. When days that I simply can’t handle moisturizer, I use this in place of it. Providing just enough bounce and brightening, it gets the job done.

The Gist: Hydrating. Protecting. Cute package. This serum has all the power of your regular moisturizer packed into a light serum to provide lasting hydration all day. Mix with Rael’s Moisture Melt Snowballs once a week for a lil’ extra zhush.
